A First Place Team

As some of you may know, I am a diehard New York Mets fan. That’s my local baseball team. I’m sure some of you are diehard football fans, who tend to favor teams that you may live nearby, such as Arsenal and Manchester United. Baseball fans are just as fanatic!

So, it’s with great pleasure that I sit here and write proudly about my team being in first place. But it wasn’t easy getting here, I can assure you!

It’s been over 25 years since we could set our sites on a World Series Championship. In that time, we’ve (and all fans act like they are a part of the team!) made mistakes, learned to re-build, and made sure we had a plan where every player was engaged in helping create the road to success. All stemming from the top down: the owners, the general manager and the team manager. Every year that we ended up in last place (and there were many), all I could say is: next year. So did thousands of others, but waiting for next year to achieve a goal takes a lot of patience.

Of course, many like myself think they can manage things better. I will tell you what I would do. I would have a plan of action. I would start – even if I had the worst team – with a basic list of what I hope to achieve (first place) and how I would go about it. I would list the people I would need to help me get to this goal – pitchers, catchers, outfielders, etc., and from there I would look at preparing my team for play. I would look at the other teams and look at the best case scenario to achieve a win, as well as alternatives.

You might be asking yourself what’s this got to do with web to print? After all, this is being hosted on a RedTie website. Well the truth is, a web to print software solution should be thought out just like a baseball team. Who is going to do what? Who sells it internally? Who sells it externally? Who is going to do the actual building of products and storefronts? And, most important, you need put together a winning team!

I hear people say “I know I need this, but I don’t know why” or “If I buy it they will come” and I think to myself, these folks need a plan of action. They need to make a list of what they hope to achieve. No different than a baseball team, they will need to make sure they have the right players, too. Then, with those basics, perhaps a World Series trophy will be within their reach.

OK, sounds basic, I know. But in truth, it is simple.

Now let’s play ball!
