We are currently making the final preparations for an open day on the 10th of October to show off all the new features that have been added to the software over the last few months. The open day is for our current customers and it is turning into a bit of an annual event.
In the internet world there are still good reasons to meet face to face. First we operate in an industry where we supply a lot of the information about the company, such as new feature updates, in digital form. It is faster, cheaper and more efficient to do things this way but you always run the risk of becoming a faceless organisation. It is a bit like Web to Print, the old world communication techniques cannot (or at least do not have to be) completely replaced by the modern internet communication techniques. The new communication methods need to supplement the old ones, but only where it makes more sense to do so.
The other reason we try to have at least one group meeting per year with our customers is because we are a wish list led development company. Of course we have lots of ideas about what we would like to develop next but a group conversation with the people out there using the software in the real world (at the coal face!) can really help formalise the plan for the next 12 months work we are going to focus on. We could, and do, do that over the internet too, there are many ways to hold meetings online but have you noticed how meetings flow more freely in the real world and sometimes feel a little stilted or one sided online. Maybe it is something other than just voice that we work from in real world meetings, such as some body language that we pick up on that just makes them flow more easily.
So I was discussing with our Technical Manager about what I should present and we came to the conclusion that we both like these face to face meetings with customers and we don't do anywhere near enough of them. Why limit it to one day a year?
