Web to Print Success the British Cycling Team Way

In the 2008 Beijing Olympics the British Cycling Team took the games by storm. So dominant were they in the velodrome that the rules were changed for the 2012 London Olympics in an effort to make the sport more open. In this year’s Olympics only one rider from each country can compete in the solo track events, so each county can only get one medal in each event. Just think of that in terms of track events like the Men’s 100m, rather than seeing the fastest 10 men on the planet, 4 of the starting 8 finalists would never been allowed to even qualify (2 from the 3 USA qualifiers and 2 from the 3 Jamaican qualifiers).

So was the change to the rules a success? In 2008 the cycling team brought home 14 medals (eight gold, four silver and two bronze) across all disciplines. As I write this there are currently 7 more finals to take place, 3 in the velodrome, 2 in BMX and 2 for the mountain bikers and the current British medal tally stands at 9 (6 gold, 1 silver and 2 bronze). With the rule changes meaning that the GB Team can’t get any pairs of medals in the same events (at least on the track) I think we have to say that it has not worked at all. In the velodrome they have medalled in every event so far apart from one and in five of those seven finals they have taken top spot. There is a good chance they will medal in all ten events. So where has all this success come from and is there anything we can learn for our Web to Print strategies?

After the 2000 Sydney Olympics UK Sport, using lottery funding, started a new programme for the cycling team. The structure of the whole team was changed and set up to run much more like a business, not to make money but to earn gold medals. Dave Brailsford joined the team and eventually became the Director of Performance for the squad and then things really began to change. He set the targets he wanted the team to achieve and then worked backwards putting all the pieces in place to make that happen. Not just the superb athletes, but the coaches, medical team, technicians and the bikes. Working in a sport where, at least on the track, winning and losing are separated by such tiny differences he understood that everything has to be right, down to the tiniest detail to get that hundredth of a second advantage on the track.

In terms of Web to Print I think there is a lot that can be learnt from the team. First there needs to be a leader, who has targets and is prepared to put things in place to meet those targets. This has to come from the top of the organisation (or at least very near to the top), everyone’s targets need to be aligned (and known) from the top down.

Then the right team members must be in place all the way through the organisation, they have to be on board to achieve the targets, of course they will all have their own specialities and should strive for excellence, but they have to have the same goals, have a more general understanding of what is the company is trying to achieve and understand why and how their role will contribute.

Finally you need the right equipment, not just hardware but the software that can make your Web to Print targets achievable. In cycling the GB team are striving for 100ths of a second performance gains. Business is equally competitive, you need a software solutions partner who are specialists in the Web to Print field, who constantly strives to give you the best tools to meet your targets, who is passionate about what they do and know how to solve real world problems to give you that extra competitive advantage.

If you set everything up correctly from the start, you don’t have to worry when someone changes the rules, you will have the team and systems to deal with it and still meet (or beat) your targets. Dave Brailsford likens himself as the conductor of an orchestra with the best musicians in the world working towards that show stopping symphony. Isn’t it time your Web to Print orchestra started aiming for the same?

As a side note Dave Brailsford also put together Team Sky with the goal of winning the Tour de France in 5 years. This year they accomplished this feat, in the only their third year, with a stunning team effort leading to Bradley Wiggins taking top spot.

These are the awesome members of Team GB Cycling squad that have medalled so far this in this year’s Olympics.
